A scheduled football doubleheader at Missoula County Stadium this Friday has been broken up.
The Missoula Hellgate Knights, slated to take on Billings Senior at 4 p.m. at the city’s high school football complex, will instead compete inside the home of the University of Montana Grizzlies. Hellgate will kick off at Washington-Grizzly Stadium on the UM campus at 7 p.m.
It’s homecoming week for the Knights and coach R.L. Boyles wanted Hellgate to get the true homecoming experience, said Lynn Farmer, the school’s assistant principal and athletic director. That meant a night game. And what better venue than Wa-Griz to provide it.
Missoula Big Sky, the team to follow the Hellgate matinee on Friday at Missoula County Stadium, will not change the time of its scheduled game. The Eagles will face the top-ranked Class AA program in the state, Bozeman, at 7:30 p.m.
Friday’s action was the first of two such back-to-back games at the stadium that houses all three AA Missoula schools. Next week on Friday, Oct. 4, Billings West plays Missoula Sentinel at 4 p.m. while Hellgate gets the late game at 7:30 p.m. against Butte High.
Sentinel is scheduled to play a game at Washington-Grizzly Stadium the following week. The Spartans face Kalispell Glacier for a 7 p.m. start under the lights while Big Sky and Hellgate spar across town at 7:30 p.m.
Both games at the Grizzlies’ stadium are occurring on Friday nights immediately before Montana road games.
