The State AA softball tournament in Great Falls chopped off a day from its traditional three-day format and wrapped up on Friday in an experimental schedule change for 2014.
The MHSA shortened the length of the eight-team tournament to see if 15 games of softball could squeeze into two days without any trouble, said Mark Beckman, executive director of the Montana High Schools Association. ASA tournaments do it all the time, he pointed out.
But should Montana’s state tournaments?
Typically in cross-classification co-ops — where one smaller school sends its athletes to a larger one for after-school sports — the balance is hardly even. The setup allows the smallest educational institutions to offer a sport that they themselves don’t have the enrollment to hold in-house.
Well that’s not the case in Sanders County. The Plains Horsemen and Hot Springs Savage Heat have one of the most fearsome Class B-C wrestling squads from western Montana this year and a lot of that power is coming from the tiny town of Hot Springs. Continue reading
When it comes to B-C softball, no team has a comparable track record to the Florence Falcons.
Since the Montana High School Association added the classification for the 1999 season, the Falcons have won the championship seven times. That includes two straight after a 6-2 victory over Ronan in the state final on Saturday. Continue reading
