Nearly a year ago, Kalispell Glacier center Ryan Edwards made a committment to attend Gonzaga in the fall of 2013 to play basketball for the Zags. He signed a letter of intent in November making it official.
The 7-footer had received offers from a number of other schools in the Inland Northwest – Washington State, Boise State, Montana and Montana State among them. Perhaps it was partly because of the interest of the latter two institutions that Edwards’ future with Gonzaga came into question this year. Everyone from Edwards to his high school coach Mark Harkins to Griz head men’s basketball coach Wayne Tinkle had heard the rumors.
Had Gonzaga really rescinded its scholarship offer? What did this mean for Edwards’ basketball playing days? Would he be staying local, heading down U.S. Highway 93 into Missoula to become a Grizzly?
The short answer: No.
“You know, somebody started a blog and it kind of exploded,” Edwards said this week as he prepared for the Montana-Wyoming All-Star basketball series. “I just looked at it and laughed.”
To set the record straight, Edwards said, the stories had no standing. The big man, who graduated from Glacier High this past weekend, still plans to suit up for Gonzaga on scholarship this winter.
